When you’re on the start line and adrenaline is high, it’s tempting to go hard, go fast, and get ahead early. For short races this approach pays dividends, but if you’ve got a bridge start, and a longer race, you have to pace yourself.
Whilst your opponent may get away ahead of you, being able to keep your head and not panic is key. A fast start can feel decisive, but crews that push too hard, too early risk burning energy, and struggling to maintain pace. Experienced competitors settle into a sustainable rhythm, allowing them to stay competitive and put in pushes when they need to.
Success is less about a single effort and more about pacing, awareness, and composure over the full distance.
There’s a useful parallel with long-term financial decisions. It can be easy to focus on short-term opportunities or react when others appear to be moving ahead. But early decisions don’t usually determine the outcome.
Long-term financial planning is less about one perfect decision and more about maintaining a consistent, considered approach. Circumstances evolve, and uncertainty is inevitable. Having a clear direction and the discipline to stick with it can be just as important as how you begin.
Progress can also be misleading. Early leaders may look dominant, but races are often decided later. What matters is how well effort is sustained over time. Short-term movements rarely tell the full story; a longer-term view provides a more meaningful measure of progress.
